Hello Coolmic users, I’m R, a designer at Coolmic.
It has been just over three years since I became a designer at Coolmic in 2022. I wanted to communicate more with all of you, so I decided to write an article about design. I’m Japanese and not very good at English, so I used AI to help me translate this.
Today, I’d like to share the story of when we implemented Dark Mode on Coolmic. Are you using the Dark Mode feature?
In November 2024, our Planning Team conducted interviews with users. It was the first time Coolmic directly interviewed users!
We asked a couple of users various questions, and 80% of them said that the feature they wanted most on Coolmic was “Dark Mode.”
We at Coolmic had been wanting to implement Dark Mode for a while, but since we weren’t sure if there was real demand for it, we couldn’t prioritize it.
However, hearing directly from users in the interviews gave us the confidence we needed, and we finally decided to implement Dark Mode. Right after the interviews in December 2024, we began preparations for development.
Our team consisted of just three people: one designer (myself), one assistant for image production, and one software engineer.
We redesigned all the banners on the top page and replaced them. That’s because the old banners had white borders that would stand out awkwardly against a dark background. ↓
After that, we discussed the implementation details, listed all the areas that required color changes, prepared dark mode-specific icons, and worked closely with the software engineer throughout the process. We completed the major parts of the implementation within December and announced the new feature on the site.
Our team prioritizes speed when releasing new features, so it’s common for us to fine-tune the design after the initial release. In January 2025, I made some small design adjustments. At Coolmic, it’s not unusual for designers to directly edit HTML/CSS.
What do you think of Dark Mode? Do you prefer it over Light Mode?

We at Coolmic truly value user feedback, and we’re committed to continuing to improve the site quickly and effectively based on your input!
