There are some secrets to the manga publishing world that are still left to be discovered! We have all come across that completely blank page and wondered if we were cheaped outta our money or got corrupted data.
Let the truth be told!
It’s actually really simple. Mangaka (the Japanese word for the artists who draw manga) usually spend many hours, days, and months preparing upwards of almost 200 pages to compile into a volume (or a collection of chapters).
Volumes (or Tankobon) are a collection of maybe previously weekly published chapters. Depending on the artist, the page number for each chapter, etc, a volume can contain anywhere from 3 to 10 chapters, with an average of about 6 or so chapters.
There are many famous works that you know might be very well aware of, like One Piece, Naruto, Jujutsu Kaisen, etc that release on a weekly basis but also eventually release from the publisher in a book format. It’s kind of like that!
But what’s the difference between my digital volume and my normal digital manga that I buy?
In the two images, the first is from the digital chapter release, while the second is from the digital volume release. The white page was intentionally added to ensure the page is already prepared for the volume compilation. This way, they avoid the need to create entirely new content when transitioning from the chapter to the full volume formats.
It isn’t as simple as just adding a page in your word document and call it a day. Each page is formatted, drawn, and saved as image files (usually with one of the popular application like Adobe or Studio Clip).
Volumes often include special drawings, character descriptions, and exclusive pages created by the artist. Sometimes, they even feature information or a page about the author. Digital chapter releases, however, do not include these extras, which is why you might occasionally see blank or white pages in those formats!
We have all read a book before, right?
Did you notice that even in your favorite books that there is the title page and the reverse side of that title page is white? It’s just like that!
While we at WWWave and Coolmic strive to create new and existing manga that will excite the world, we, and other publishers, take into account the publishing aspect of our digitally released works!
If it was a perfectly world, we would publish and sell every single title in paperback/volume format! But if it doesn’t sell… It’s just the hard reality of the manga industry.
If you don’t buy it digitally. You’ll never see it on shelves. The cost of the physical production as risen too much in the last few years to take risks on titles that may or may not sell.
